FAQ for future pilots

1. At what age can you start courses to become a pilot?

In fact, there is no minimum age to start. During the course to obtain the private pilot license, a part of the training activity is foreseen without an instructor on board (the so-called “single pilot” activity) and to carry it out you must be 16 years old, while for the final exam you must be 17. It goes without saying that, if the course normally lasts between 8 and 18 months, you can ideally start the course shortly before turning 16. To access the professional courses, however, you must be 18 years old.

2. Can I become a pilot if I wear glasses?

Civilian pilots can use corrective lenses. There are diopter limits per eye but online you can find the regulation called EASA Part MED with all the parameters that must be respected.

3. Do I need to know English well to work as a pilot?

English is essential in this job. The courses are in English, as are the exams, the flight manuals, the regulations. Obviously, by definition, with this job you cross national borders and therefore it is important to know the language that is now common throughout the world. Both for airline pilots and for those in other aircraft categories, there is a specific exam to take called the “Language Proficiency Check”, which is necessary to pass to become professional pilots and to fly abroad. And in any case, if you start traveling the world, knowing a few other languages will never hurt.

4. How do you become an airline pilot?

An airline pilot begins his career by obtaining a commercial pilot license for an airplane, the instrument rating, the twin-engine rating, and the multi-crew rating, and then must obtain the rating on the specific model used by the company he wants to be admitted to. There are many recruitment programs in which companies choose potential pilots to hire by making selections even before, during, or after obtaining the official pilot title. You enter as a co-pilot and then you can aspire to become a captain.

5. How do you become a helicopter rescue pilot?

A helicopter rescue pilot begins his career by obtaining a commercial helicopter pilot license. To become a member of the HEMS crew, you must have gained some work experience first. Hiring at aerial work or passenger transport companies will therefore be a fundamental step to access the application to become a helicopter rescue co-pilot. To become a commander, on the other hand, you must have a lot of experience as a rescue pilot (if you have had access as a co-pilot) or in firefighting or barycentric hook work (if you come from other experiences as a commander).
